TENCOUNT
The story of Tencount through the eyes of Shawn Mason...
The first time I met Neal and Jason was in the Phat City parking lot. They told me they would be in a brown Nova drinking and, surprise thats where I found them, half way through a 66 of whisky. It was the middle of December (95) and I think Ten Days Late and Porksword were on that night (and, if I remember correctly, it was the night Porksword invited the entire audience to join them onstage for a round of "Keep on Rockin in the Free World). Dave Barker told me that there were a couple of guys wanting to start a punk band and were looking for a bass player. A couple phone calls later and there we were. We jammed a few times and went through our share of bad names (Sprokit Joks and the Blokes were a couple). We decided on Tencount by the time we got hooked up with our first show at a place called The Hardcore Compund (yet another short-lived punk club in Saskatoon) opening up for Rotundi. There were only about twenty people there but we had a good time (and even got two beer each for playing). Tim from OWC told us that Simon Head, the guy that they usually recorded with was coming through town to record that April (96) so we practiced up and went to record for the first time. We did six songs and released our first tape pretty soon after that. We made 120 copies at first and then later made another 130. The tape got an OK review in Maximumrocknroll and a pretty shitty one in Heartattack. Heh heh whatever. Since then weve recorded with Simon twice more, and played glamourous shows throughout Saskatchewan and Manitoba, reaching such scenic retreats as Tisdale, Bedford School, Melfort and Prince Albert (fuckin' rockstars). Weve opened up for some good bands (MDC, Dayglo Abortions, Anti-Flag) and some shitty ones (Downway, and Diesal Boy - the first that come to mind), but always had a pretty good time doing it. We just released a new tape and plan to tour the world
