nanisivik is a mining town of about 300 people
on the northern coast of baffin island in canada's
nunavut province (formerly part of the northwest
territories), several hundred miles above the arctic
circle. the song "nanisivik" was written for my friend
richard, who lives there. the original version was
composed on acoustic guitar, and it is available
on the e.p. as the "summer" version. i then recorded
a version on electric guitar, which is the "winter"
version. i'd intended to have only those two versions,
but then i was playing around with some new
music software and came up with some interesting
effects, which i used to make the "fall" and "spring"
versions, and i put the four tracks together as an e.p.
i sent richard a copy of the disc for christmas, and he told me that the background noise in the "winter" version sounded exactly like the weather outside that night.
