Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) wrote a set of twelve magnificent concerti grossi during the 1680s that were left unpublished until 1714--a year after his death. A master of the trio sonata form and a major influence upon the young Handel, these grand concertos are essentially trio sonatas for an augmented ensemble and represent the direct forerunner of the Classical symphony. Here arranged as a trio sonata movement, with an updated but nonetheless authentic bass realization. |

Johann Michael Haydn (1737-1806) was long eclipsed by his older and more illustrious brother Franz Josef for the better part of two centuries. In his own time, however, he was celebrated for his church music in the old contrapuntal style as well as his more fashionable secular works. The offertory from his St. Jerome Mass of 1777, this Timete Dominum is here arranged for brass consort and continuo. Written by a quintessentially Classical composer, this piece is best not described as such, but rather as an example from the twilight of the Baroque. |
