Sonny Rollins BioTenor saxophonist-composer Sonny Rollins has been at the forefront of theartform for the past 40 years. Considered a true master, Rollins' career hasseen him in the company of jazz's elite, performing and recording with BudPowell, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, Clifford Brown and manyothers. Born in 1930 in New York City, Rollins started on the piano, took upalto saxophone and then switched to tenor after being influenced by ColemanHawkins, who lived in his neighborhood. He made his recording debut in 1949with Babs Gonzales and within the same year appeared with Fats Navarro, J.J.Johnson and Powell on his first of many influential recordings. |
