The title comes from a quotation by John Cage: "Sometimes compatibility hides itself. Probably, we are ultimately compatible with everything, but we make it impossible for things to reach us, or they just don't cross our paths, or some such thing.". In the piece, the separate instrumental parts are precisely notated but can be played together as the performers wish, enabling the possibility of unforeseen coincidences to appear in the music. There are parts for a variety of different instruments, and any combination of these can be used. |

These five pieces are drawn from a set of short pieces that can be played in various combinations, depending on the available instruments. They are separated by silences of varied lengths. The title is a generic one; other performances of ‘Five pieces’ might not necessarily feature the same twelve pieces. |
