Franz Liszt: Nuages Gris (Grey Clouds), like Unstern, was composed during the last years of Liszt life and like other pieces from this period possesses a stark almost impressionistic quality. The harmonic content is far ahead of its time, even anticipating the serial techniques of the Viennese School. Stanley Kubrick used Nuages Gris in the soundtrack to his final film Eyes Wide Shut. |

Unstern (literally Dark Star or Evil Star) is another product from the last years of Liszt's life. In many ways it is even more experimental and harmonically daring than Nuages Gris. It has been suggested that the Chromatic ascending augemented triads in the middle of the piece represent the slow movement of the strange star as it travels along the horizon, whilst the closing chords suggest the supplication of a frightened crowd. |
