The Ecstasy of Theresa - De Extase van Theresa,
Intermezzo (Johan Sanctorum: 'Requiem')
In the empty middle between the prologue and the epilogue of his Requiem, Johan Sanctorum decided to put an orchestral intermezzo dedicated to the famous sculpture of Bernini: The Ecstasy of Theresa.
In a Rossini-like way, the composer leaves us with this marvellous suite in the middle of nowhere. Why is Theresa playing with her body between two Reynart-scènes?
The embedded link however in Bernini's masterwork, between mystics and (female) libido, keeps inspiring the composer and justifies its place on this cd.
Moreover, Sanctorum rewrote the orchestral score again into a piano-score, to demonstrate the possibilities of MIDI and PC-sound modules. This necessary emancipatory movement, away from the tiranny of pianists, is a line which we already discover in the work of Beethoven and Liszt. Wouldn't they have been musical PC-freaks in our time?
Although the musical style and ritmical patterns recall Stravinsky (especially his Sacre), the diabolic explosion at the end is rather explicit: no virgins are sacrified here, the whole suite is an evocation of living female climax.
Als scharnier tussen de proloog en de epiloog van het Requiem fungeert het orchestraal intermezzo 'De Extase van Theresa', naar het bekende beeldhouwwerk van Bernini. Voor Sanctorum ligt de genialiteit van dit werk juist in de voor die tijd totaal nieuwe link tussen mystiek, lichaam en libido.
Voor de CD 'Maupertuis' herschreef hij de partituur terug naar de piano, waarvan de klank hem blijft obsederen. Het MIDI-instrumentarium verlost de componist niet alleen van practische beslommeringen rond vingerzettingen en ander pianistenleed, maar laat tevens een experimentele benadering en verfijning van deze sound toe, die een heel aparte dialoog aangaat met de live-zangstemmen in de aria's van de CD.
Daarmee wil de componist een draad terug opnemen die we zeer duidelijk terugvinden bij klassieke componisten als Beethoven en Liszt. Wie twijfelt er nog aan dat beiden, hadden ze in onze tijd geleefd, muzikale computerfreaks zouden geweest zijn?
'De extase van Theresa' is een furieuze barok-suite waarvan het ritmisch en harmonisch palet bijwijlen aan Stravinsky herinnert (vooral de Sacre); de duivels die losgelaten worden naar het einde toe laten er nochtans geen misverstand over bestaan: hier worden geen maagden geofferd,- we bevinden ons middenin de schuimende wellust van hun levend en glorieus lichaam.
