    "Quante Stelle", Venus-idyll
(Johan Sanctorum: "Cesare Borgia', Act I )
    - Annelies Meskens, soprano

Unlike the first Venus-song 'Io spero e lo sperar', this idyll has no content but its own lyrical apotheosis in which text is almost vanishing.
In front of the agressor of Firenze, Cesare Borgia, Venus, patroness of the city, develops her full femininity... making love to herself. The composer applied a 'pointillistic' music style with thousands of small notes, evocating an infinity of stars at night, as a mirror of Venus' glorified and twinkling body. This 'Venus-Idyll' intends to be a paraphrase and tender parody of Botticelli's famous painting
'The Birth of Venus'. Lyrics are from Puccini's 'Madame Butterfly', by Johan Sanctorum identified as a Venus-incarnation. The extremely lyrical style of this song refers in many ways to Italian opera tradition, although embedded in a voice-dramatical and tragical infrastructure, referring to Wagner and R. Strauss.

    Quante stelle!
    Non le vidi
    Mai si belle!
    Ah...dolce notte...
    Trema, brilla,
    Notte serena.
    Ogni favella
    Col baglior
    d'una pupilla... Ah!
    Ah, quanti occhi
    Fisi, attenti
    d'Ogni parte a riguardar..:
    Ride il Ciel!
    Trema, brilla,
    Ogni favella,
    Ah, que dolce notte,
    Ride il ciel...
    Tutto estatico d'amor!
    Pei firmamenti...
    Via pei lidi...
    Via pel mare
    Amor...
    Quante stelle
Non le vidi mai si belle...
    Cala, cala,
    Dolce notte
    Notte...
