"God save us from the fury of the Northmen,"
such were the prayers of monks after the first vengeful raids of the Heathen
Vikings. But the Vikings were not just merciless killers. Their raids
were first sparked by Charlemange's persecution of pagan Saxons, Danes,
and others. A noble race, they felt they went to Valhalla upon death, and
joyfully lifted their drinking horns of mead to Odin, god of poetry, death,
and battle. It is fitting their emotions be reborn in the artwork
of Heavy Metal artists like Asatru, Einherjer, and Dosenhof Wodenson.
