    CHET NICHOLS

    Musical Performance History

To begin, thank you for visiting Chet's website. He has SEVEN CDs available for purchase. He recently was awarded the Grand Prize in the Route 66 Theme Song Contest for his song, "The Last Riders On Route 66". This song was acknowledged as..."the most important new song about Route 66 in a generation".

    "Time Loop"

    The Songs:
Horses and Eagles, Electra, Water Sand Castles, Who Stole The Ivy, Lonely Woman, The Ballad Of Diamond Joe, (Spinning On The) Time Loop, Tell Me What The Count Is, The Offing, The Beetles Are Coming, Quasar Sleeper

A review of the LP/CD "Time Loop":
"Spacy psychfolk debut album from 1972. Amongst the obscurest LPs on the Kama-Sutra label, bent loner outsider folky like a disturbed Tim Buckley at times, has a raw underground edge that would make it big $$$ if it were the same music on a private press, but still a bargain as it did get out on this semi-major label in their later days... weird song titles like "Who Stole The Ivy", "The Offing", "The Beetles Are Coming", "Quasar Sleeper" give an indication that this guy was out there. Acoustic guitar actions mix with electric, piano by Nicky Hopkins (RIP), recorded at Wally Heider's studio in SF, so maybe he's outta California. A absolute necessary LP for fans of outside folk. He's like America's Roy Harper, then again, he's sorta of an early Dave Mathews on mushrooms and certainly a forerunner of the AAA crowd. This was the first album in the USA to be mastered using the Dolby Systems - one of the most underrated works ever!!!." eBay-Germany

    "Waving Prairie"

A review of the LP/CD "Waving Prairie":
"A hauntingly beautiful CD. This is a re-make of this artist's vinyl version produced in the mid-70's. Filled with an array of the "who's-who" players in San Francisco including Pete Sears, Jack Schoer, Spencer Dryden, Zakir Hussan to name a few. The artist continues in his psych-a-folk style and offers some classic psychfolk songs. He plays some nice bottleneck guitar on this effort, too, which shows some strong blues influences. One thing that impressed me is how well the CD flows and holds together. Nichols surfaces as sort of a male-Joni Mitchell on this CD, with shades of Donavan. Notable songs are "Lady, Oh, Lady","Kites In The County", "Red Tide" and the title tune, "Waving Prairie"(a killer tune!). Working with accomplished producer/engineer, Stephen Barncard (of CSN&Y fame), Nichols weaves some interesting tales backed by airy, minimalistic arrangements. This is a limited-edition retro CD that belongs in any serious collectors collection of 70's singer/songwriters. I saw him perform solo once at The Family Dog on Sunday between bands and I was blown away by all his special tunings and his strong vocals and quiet, qwirky stage presence. Worth looking into."
