Across the Square was composed by Patty Carpenter in memory of her friend Fritz Hewitt, who died of AIDS in 1993. The Square here is Greenwich Village’s Washington Square as listeners who have “hung” there on a weekend afternoon will recognize. The song is based on a moment remembered that was shared by Patty, Scott Shetler, and Fritz. Shetler plays clarinet here and Tom McClung takes a fine piano solo with Dave Shapiro’s walking bass behind him. |

This one is from a family session I did last year with my daughter Melissa and her father Scott Shetler, who wrote this tune. Melissa and I have been playing out together for years and Scotty has played on some of my previous recordings. We all met on the banks of the Delaware with a fabulous group of musicians, culled from New York and Baltimore to record a collection of songs for an upcoming CD, titled “Under My Hat.” Look back to this site in the near future to obtain more information on that. Check out more of Scott Shetler’s music at www.mp3.com/shetler |
