This dark, even subfusc work was in fact a sketch for Bloch's never completed opera, Jezabel. It is rarely played. Ms. Valois, among the first to record it, had access to the mauscript for this performance. |

This work was not discovered until after Bloch's death. Its formal construction, while simple, harbors greater complexities and harmonic ingenuity. Bloch composed it in 1914, evidently much under the influence of Debussy. |
