Kali Durge, one of the most beloved kirtans to the Devi, invokes the fierce compassion of the Mother, the force of insight that destroys the enemies of the heart. We sing, "Let me merge with that divine splendor in which we are born and live our lives and die back into again and again and again. Let me merge with Kali, Durga, and Jagadamba, with She who destroys all that stands in the way of truth, beauty, contentment, wisdom, and love. Let me know the protectress and saviour of my heart as my own Great Self." |

One of the wonders of India's spiritual tradition is its profound ubderstanding of the myriad faces of the Divine. Westerners are often confused by a seemingly infinite number of deities. The truth is, all the names and forms are simply aspects of that Supreme Un-knowable, Un-Nameable, Un-Fathomable Reality that contains and transcends all names and forms. We sing, :Let me become whole within myself. Let me know myself in all my aspects. Let the divine lovers sing and dance forever in my heart." Gauri os another name for the Goddess Parvati. Jaya means "victory to." Shankara, Vishhvanath, and Bholanath are all names for Shiva as the Sacred Masculine. Bolo means "Sing out!" |

At its most literal level, this kirtan is a song of praise to Shiva Shambho, the Abode of Bliss, and to Mata, the Mother. Underneath the surface of these names is a well of hidden meaning and power. "Let the fire of stillness, compassion, and truth awaken within me. Let that fire illuminate everything I touch, easing the pain and suffering of this world." |
