The original Arcacy favorite...songs like this just don't come along too often. More than a few people agree that this is one of the best songs ever written.
    CD: Arcacy
Credits: Steve Green: Vocals, Acoustic Guitars; Doug Vrooman: Electric Guitars; Peter Kostakis: Drums.

    Story Behind the Song
Steve Green began writing New York City in the Spring of 1997, but it was not completed until later that year.

The song's story is something like this:
    A relationship ends.
The man seeks a soft landing for both parties to the breakup.
When his efforts fail, he turns to his home for comfort.
But she is a jealous city, reluctant to receive him after being neglected during his prolonged affair.

The lyrics can be difficult to follow, because the song changes perspective. Before the guitar solo, the song is sung to the woman in the relationship. After the solo, the verse is from a first person perspective, and the final chorus is sung to the city.

The introduction to this song was recorded in a single take. Peter Kostakis's drums were also recorded in the first take, after being with the band for only three days!

There are many other versions of this song floating around. This one is track 11 on the Arcacy CD.

    Lyrics
    It's all an act,
There's been no lies but I don't care,
    This conversation's going nowhere.
I cant react the way that you expect me to,
And that was never what was true anyway.

I'm not the child you used to love,
    I've recognized what I've become,
And there are fears you must accept, and there are tears that must be wept
    Before your confidence is won.

An evil eye has cast its sight on my resolve to leave your heart unscathed.
But you defy the good intentions that could solve your troubles, cast them all away.

I'm not the child you used to love,
    I've recognized what I've become,
And there are fears you must accept, and there are tears that must be wept
    Before your confidence is won.
And there are secrets to be kept of the floundering inept
Who waste their time on what's been done.

Walking south on Seventh Avenue, these streets are all that I have ever known.
A gentle wind sweeps through the skyscrapers and takes my worries with it when it goes.

New York City don't be shallow,
You know I've walked these streets before.
I give you love, I give you everything I own,
Please don't take away my home because of her.

New York City don't be shallow,
You know I've walked these streets before.
I give you love, I give you everything I own,
Please don't take away my home because of her.

Youre the only thing that mattered more.
