Story Behind the Song
I wrote this on a dare by a friend that I couldn't write a piece of "country" music. When I played it for him he said "See, I was right, that's not country, that's more...western."
Well, it may be true I don't know "country" from a hole in my boots, but at least I got a song I like out of this.
Lyrics
I'll Never Learn (To Play This Game)
A song inside me just won't let me go
A different drummer plays a cadence that is music to my soul
No matter how I try to change, I'm still the same
I'll never learn to play this game
Feels so familiar, outside looking in
Guess half a lifetime's not long enough to know where I fit in
I've waited all my life for the call that never came
I'll never learn to play this game
Some people live a life of quiet desperation
How can you compromise and follow your heart
And can you love a man who's not sure what he's after,
Who'll stop at anything to follow his heart
To fit convention, I don't give a damn
By now it's plain to see, it's not enough to do the best I can
How could I hit that target when I never aimed
I'll never learn to play this game
