"Gracious Hiway" is a perfect encapsulation of A to Z... within the framework of a blazingly joyful "pop tune" we have: 1)- vocal sections 2)- sampling (or injection) cameos, and 3)- instrumental sections with many of those moments of "highly produced spontaneity". Dave seems to think "Gracious Hiway" is like a modern cross between a very sectional Duke Ellington boogie-opus, and a Steve Miller guitar work-out. Its overall structure of - open/build/stretch-out/climax/& coda - is an approach Dave has revisited frequently, and he’s always pleased if he can strike that balance between "packed with head-candy fun" while not being overloaded with spazzy-jazz.

    Story Behind the Song
Originally just a boppin, breezy drum arrangement that Dave had done on his first drum
machine... the Korg Super Drums (them Stupid Dumbs)... he had placed it in a cassette
sequence with Jims gracious howdy ka-do leading in... soon, the intro became the title,
Howdy became Hiway, and the feel of gliding became riding!

Lyrics were written, guitars were envisioned, and Jeff was solicited. Recorded in July of
2000, it is obviously among our most recent work, and it may be the best personification
    yet of a2zs accessible inventiveness.

    Lyrics
    gracious howdy ka-doo!

    its time to go
    or dont cha know?
    and find that hiway

    now, lets go, cmon
    some autobahn
    you know that hiway

(Leland Palmer, of Twin Peaks, sings:)

chicks and ducks and geese and better scurry
when i take you in the surry
    when i take you out

    im headin out
    im ridinon
im goin down, that gracious highway

    i sing about
    a song about
bout headin out, down that gracious highway

chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
when i fly right by in a hurry
flying high and im looking blurry
    i up-end the cops

    out!, im headin out
    im goin down
    down that gracious highway

    im headin out
    no doubt about
bout headin out on that gracious highway

    im headin out
    im ridin on
im goin down, down that gracious hiway

    i sing about
    a song about
bout headin out on that gracious highway

    (Tom Servo, of MST-3K, adds:)

chicks and ducks and geese better scurry...
chicks and ducks and geese better scurry...
