Story Behind the Song
inspired by grimy New York City, but really could be about any big city;
the hardness of life under the steel and glass
Lyrics
in between conundrum stars,
shoved in busses, subway cars,
fresh arrivals from terre haute,
flocks of sheep and billy goat
cannot get around confusion,
every manner of delusion ...
lingering in a smoky bar
down and dirty
bandmates strumming air guitars,
take demanding flights of fancy
from the cloisters to delancey . . .
the markets very tight now
and oxygen is hard to find.
if you want some mister you have to wait on line.
tweedle dum and tweedle dee
playing with their balls,
policeman holding hand
grenades sneaking down the halls.
jimmie smokes crack and i don't care.
urban reptiles everywhere
clamor up and down the stairs
reflecting on my shoes . . .
while standing on a subway train,
the gotham city blues.
