Story Behind the Song
This song Ken and Lou wrote in support for the 1990 California ballot initiative, Forest Forever, Prop 130. Ken believed that the clear cutting of the Pacific forest was the greatest tragedy perpetrated and would march vociferously in favor of the initiative. His only complaint was that it did not go far enough and jail all loggers. He and Lou would lead busses of students from Berkeley to form circles around the trees. Unfortunately loggers would usually threaten the peace loving students with their chainsaws. Their only successful demonstration occured when Ken refused to let go of a fellow demonstator and the logger got about a quarter of an inch through his arm with his saw. Ken held firm and the logger stopped when Ken's blood got in his eyes. Ken fooled with him by saying he was HIV positive (which he was not). The loggers all cleared out. Unfortunately, when camping that night, the campfire got out of control and started a fire that took out three acres of California Redwood.
