	Lyrics Matthew Locke is a predecessor of Henry Pursell and known as an ardent champion of English music at a time when foreign influence threatened to overwhelm the English tradition. He studied at home but spends several years in Holland (from 1646 and onwards) and converted to Catholicism. He later became a member of the royal chapel under Charles II.
