    Story Behind the Song
Instrumentally, this song is compositional stepping stone for me and represents a stylistic development. I normally play pieces of the melody which play off of my vocal melody. This normally happens entirely within a fingerpicked chordal framework. In this song I do this when I sing but when I play the instrumental round the melody becomes predominate. The chords are used rhthmically to accent an important beat and to signal a chord change so that the listener knows where they are within the chordal framework (and also for contrast). This happens all the time in rock -n- roll bands (and elsewhere)where there is a division of labor, i.e. the lead guitarist plays their lead solo and the rhythm guitarist or bassist accent the beat or rhyhmically 'vamps' the chords (you hear this kind of thing a lot in bluegrass music).
However, it's not as common in old country blues (barring a few players like blind lemon). Mostly because the playing doesn't sound as full without the chording and alternating bass. But I've been wanting to introduce more variation into my songs by showcasing the various elements (melody, harmony, rhythm,etc..) I think the breaks work well and they don't sound too thin and I think its because it emphasizes the rhythm of the song and changes from single time to double time back to single time. Lyrically, the song tweaks traditional verses. When I write a new tune,I usually sing verses I already know so that I can figure out how lyrics fit into the tune. I stretch out or clip syllables to get a rough idea of what sounds the most musical. Often I will adjust the tunes structure to make it more vocal 'friendly'. Then I go back and generate new lyrics or tweak the ones I borrowed to create new variations on traditional themes. Thats exactly what happened in this song and I think if you listen closely to the guitar and my vocals you can really begin to see how my musical mind works. And thats how the yodeling ended up in the song (I borrowed jimmy rodgers t for texas verse and tweaked it).
