Story Behind the Song
Oh Donna is representative of the bands early period. Heavily influenced by groups such as The Beatles, Cheap Trick and musical genres such as british pop, the song deals with the loss of innocence and the remembrance of a past love affair. There were five preliminary versions before the final version which was included in the bands first-release Anthem.
Lyrics
1.
Oh Donna, if you tell me, you tell me that you want me
If you tell me, you tell me that you need me
If you promise to hold me now and ever then Ill try to
make things a little better.
Cause I know that we are two lonely people
Holding hands without pretense you know I need to
Reach out and feel alive beyond all reason;
There some things Ive got to say...
PRE-CHORUS:
Darling, I remember every day of my life when it was filled with sorrow and pain
Then I saw you for the very first time the second I held you, never thought I could
be hurting you
CHORUS:
Oh Donna
2.
Oh Donna, done my best and Im trying to understand you
Its a sign, thats all I want, what could I ask for
If we go our separate ways for any reason
Then Ill sit back and wait; its your decision.
Thereve been lies, too many lies but Ill persist, girl
That some day, not far away, well be together
And be with you night and day some place forever
That our friends would see....
REPEAT PRE-CHORUS & CHORUS
BRIDGE:
And so, as every story goes, once you were gone
Ive been doing all my best leaving it all behind.
If I let you know theres no wrong in letting go
But memories do come as I always remember you every now and then
