Story Behind the Song
Required reading: Randy Shilt's seminal chronicle of the early days of the AIDS crisis And The Band Played On. This is my first person singular. The title comes from Reagan's famous exhortation, "It's morning in America," meaning a new era of prosperity and law and order, I guess, was dawning, but the "mourning" pun, as well as the cynical double meaning of the age of AIDS, is entirely intended.
Lyrics
Morning in America
Lets go to Castro Street and get someone to eat.
I need a bath though Im plenty clean
Im the prettiest boy in a roomful of toys
and I know I can make the scene
Lets watch Magnum P.I. and hope hes bi
oh, and if I had the Crisco I would make a pie
Time of my life down on Fire Island
I know I can make you smile
The boy from one farm over had me rolling in clover
but I could only sit on my hands
so I hitched a ride to the other side
a Shangri-La where everyone understands
Out where I was born Id hide my porn in the corn
Id sworn I was the only one
but out here, life is fair and theres plenty of air
so go ahead and fill your lungs
At night I sweat a river
in the day I shiver beneath the California sun
My new enemy is the CDC
I know I should call my mom
Oh, Im still pretty cute and Im smart to boot
Why wont anyone give me head?
I still try to score but dont read Orwell no more
because by 1984 Ill be dead.
