A fast, frantic, crunchy (few Bas Clas tunes weren't) song that the band often used to end a set. Always filled the dance floor.
CD: Live at Home 1989   Label: Serfdom Records
Credits: Words and music by Donnie Picou

    Story Behind the Song
Another clever Donnie observation about love and relationships. Subtle lyrics, in your face music. A difficult song to do without someone screwing up. Donnie flubbed a lyric in this version, but everyone else played well. Recorded live direct to cassette in the basement of the band house (from 1986-91) in Atlanta in 1989. We called the setup "Tammy Hates Ray Studio" because there was a small playhouse on the property. It was filled with grafitti, including a note that Tammy Hates Ray.

    Lyrics
    West Indies
by Donnie Picou as performed by Bas Clas

He was a brown skin man from the West Indies
She was a white girl from the city
And she was fascinated with his foreign ways
    He thought she was pretty
Well she was glad to meet him
    'neath the cover of night
    It hid her apprehension
They danced, danced, danced all night
To work off all their tension
    Chorus:
    He was looking for love
    She was looking for adventure
    He'd like to get involved
    But she made no commitments

He took her to his island in the deep blue sea
To show her how far her eyes could see
He took her for a swim in the deep blue sea
But she stayed in the shallow, hated the deep

    Repeat 1st verse, Chorus
