    Story Behind the Song
"In Memory of David's Buick" is a novel about a songwriter. I had to write songs for the protagonist. This is one originally done in 1971, recorded in 1997 in Patrick Hazell's barn.

    It will cause me pain
To ride in your back seat again
Because we once were real crazy
    Rolling down those endless highways

Radio screaming out each time we go
Drinking up the cheap beer and wine
Sailing bottles off the road signs
And I never was quite sure
If we were on the right side
    Of the white line

Shake me up, don't break down
Take me back to my hometown

    We so young
Don't know what kind of race we run
Lost dreams blowing out the window
Running after what we don't know
    River highway always will flow
And I never was quite sure
If we were on the right side
    Of the white line

    Life is real
When you get behind the steering wheel
Let it roll, let it ride
Guided by the stars and moonlight
Run away into the warm night
And I never was quite sure
If we were on the right side
    Of the white line
