Story Behind the Song
This is a story of one woman's plight in an arranged marriage that ends in her murder.
Lyrics
Hello My name is Louisa Liesel,
a woman of pride you will see
There's tragedy in my story I'll tell,
but please don't feel sorry for me
At sixteen years old I was wed to a man
His name and his wealth I would share
A child for every late summer he planned,
for I would give birth to his heir
But I said, "Dream, my girl Dream, my girl
Someday this burden will cease
Dream, my girl, dream!
I know in my years I'll find peace."
Five seasons had passed, not a son to his name
His anger grew more bitter toward me
I prayed every night hoping he'd change
but what other choice could I see?
Soon nothing would Keep him from raising his hand
The devil's rum possessed him I feared
Cleaning his gun after supper each night,
a threat that was perfectly clear
(chorus)
Twelve seasons had passed
nay a word I would cast
'til something inside of me roared.
I stood from my knees
just as proud as I pleased,
for he would not beat me no more!
But I'm sorry to say
my life changed from that day,
for living is never too sound
My husband and I will never see eye to eye
now that I rest in the ground.
(chorus)
