Folks compare the tone and style of this tune to Tori Amos. "And you can thank everyone who said/'I can take the walls down in one night'/came at me like a nuclear bomb/then ran from the fallout in fright/Then the walls come back/more than before/with thicker vines/blacker roses/sharper thorns..." | MP3.com CD: Sampler - buy it! Story Behind the Song
It's one of those songs born out of pain, folks. It's about what happens when someone comes into your life, knocks all your walls down, gets inside - and then disappears on you. And then, your walls go back up even higher than before. I wanted som sort of a balance, so in this song, I wanted to toy with the idea of bringing the walls down, but brick by brick, rather than all at once. Seems a bit safer, eh?

BRICK BY BRICK (THIS TIME)

VERSE
And you can thank everyone
Who tried to get to me
Everyone who simply chose
To try, convict and punish me
They each gave me
A brick for this wall
And up against it
You know I feel kinda small
VERSE
And you can thank everyone
Who made a tale of me
Told their story
basked in their glory
Didn't care if it
Mattered to me
They each gave me
A brick for this wall
A wall so tall
I can't even see
The top at all
PRECHORUS
I'd like to take the wall
Full down
Like to take the wall
Full down
CHORUS
Could we take the wall
Full down
Could we make it come
Crashing round
Brick by brick
This time
Would you have the patience
Could you even be so kind
Could we take the walls
Full down
Could we make them come
Crashing round
The walls around my heart
Make them fall apart
Brick by brick
This time
VERSE
And you can thank everyone
Who got to close to me
Everyone who fell for me
But just wouldn't come through for me
They each gave me
A brick for this wall
A wall so tight and close
Can't see through it at all
VERSE
And you can thank everyone
Who said
I can take the walls down in one night
Came at me like a nuclear bomb
And them ran from the fallout in fright
Then the walls come back more than before
With thicker vines
Blacker roses
Sharper thorns
PRECHORUS
CHORUS
BRIDGE
VERSE
And you can thank everyone
Who tried to get to me
Everyone who simply chose
To try convict and punish me
Then the walls come back
More than before
With thicker vines
Blacker roses, sharper thorns
CHORUS TO end
