Story Behind the Song
On My Own......A journey through life. Looking for some kind of direction
to be happy with, and finding a love that brings all the other stuff into
focus. Most of the time, anyway.
Lyrics
On My Own
It was another year, maybe '72
some other place, I didn't have a clue
was it Prairie Du Chein, or Timbuktu
when I was on my own
I had a new guitar & I could barely play
travelled near and far, sorry I couldn't stay
tried to write some love songs, I had nothing to say
when I was on my own
I tried to keep my word, I tried to do what's right
sometimes I just went blind, couldn't tell black from white
acted like a fool, acted out of spite
when I was on my own
There was fly by love, yes, it came and it went
from the cup we drank, 'till we were bruised and spent
did we cheat and lie, did we all get bent?
when I was on my own
All the oaths we swore, the promises to keep
I played the fool in love, I cried myself to sleep
was the price too high, was the pain too deep?
when I was on my own
The petty little wars, afraid to call a truce
all the wasted time and the senseless abuse
no apologies, I didn't see the use
when I was on my own
You see, I was a boy in love with every skirt that moved
I had a one track mind, I was tongue & grooved
I was liberal, hormone approved
when I was on my own
I could see her face and I could smell her hair
I could read her thoughts, see the smile she'd wear
feel her skin so soft, she was out there, somewhere
when I was on my own
You can't try too hard in your search for love
I opened up my heart, I got a snow white dove
now when I look back, I can rise above
when I was on my own
