A melding of middle-eastern flavours with overdriven guitar... hypnotic... a story of torporific frustration...

    Story Behind the Song
The music for the song was inspired by a Jewish mode used in a play I was assistant directing at the time. Lyrically, the words describe the dichotomy of being okay but feeling as though something is horribly wrong (a recurring theme in the lyrics). The proud refusal of any help which leads to the suicide of the 'speaker' marks the nihilistic frustration in the song.

The arrangement was fleshed out from the 12-string guitar part, and in some cases - eg the Cello part - the musician was free to improvise. Also used in the recording was an Egyptian tabla (like a djembe) and a chanter (part of a bagpipes). The hyper-effected guitar was turned up and held close to the speaker, so only a light tap on the strings was required for a fully 'grunged' sound.

    Lyrics
    ETERNAL DRIFT

    Remove me from persistent questioning
I have no use for this interrogation of my mind
You know you have no business
So please cease your plastic niceness
I'd find this vision easy were I blind

I know that your intentions are well-meant
But please refrain from patronizing my intelligence
I know the things I feel
They're carved in stone with bloody seal
No reason I've found for a weak pretence

    For nothing is amiss
I do assure you I am in bliss
And though I hate eternal drift
Feel free to call me when you wish
    'Cause I've got time

Reduce for me the suffering I feel
I'd take it through the heart and mouth if it would ease the pain
    Don't look for moral answers
For you will do just as the man says
Don't let me go through all this again

    Yet nothing is amiss
    (etc)

    I've got time
    I've got time

I thank you once again for all you've done
Your time with me is finished so please leave me to my fun
And rude I don't mean by this
But your efforts have been useless
For tomorrow I won't see the morning sun
Yeah tomorrow I won't see the morning sun

    Still nothing is amiss
    (etc)

    I've got time
    I've got time
