Story Behind the Song
A friend called me one day from the psychiatric ward of a hospital to explain she had suffered a breakdown due to years of physical and sexual abuse. As I listened to her story, I became very angry at here abusers. In order to deal with my anger over the horrible story I had just been told, I immediately sat down to write.
Lyrics
Don't Let Them Harm You
Words and Music-Carol Hahn, copyright 1999
No don't let them harm you
No don't let them shatter the dreams in your heart
They take just what they need then leave you here to bleed
No, don't let them harm you
You tell your story with downcast eyes your face so filled with shame
It all started so long ago, this legacy of pain
It grows just like a sickened seed for generations it will breed
No, don't let them harm you
No, don't let them harm you
No, don't let them see the tears in your eyes
Their pleasure is your pain, you think you are to blame
No, don't let them harm you
The children see it every day, the sorrow in your eyes
They like you have learned to be masters of disguise
You teach them nothing when you stay, they've never learned to hope, just pray
No don't let them harm you
No, don't let them harm you
No don't let them see the tear in your eyes
Their pleasure is your pain, you're not he one to blame
No, don't let them harm you
Dirtied by their words and deeds, you never learned to fight to be free
You think you deserved just what you got, no faith, no love, no hope, you're lost
The cycle of horror goes on and on, you must stop it now so life can go on
No, don't let them harm you
No, don't let them harm you
No, don't let them harm you
