Story Behind the Song
This two-song cycle begins with the impersonal and apocalyptic Vision of Night Snow in White Light. The text,
by the composer's brother Eric Nelson, describes a vision of suns and moons blazing as they fall, "descending as
angels" in to the waiting seas of the Earth. The movement closes with quiet but troubled chords leading to the
second song.
On the Shore is set to a text by the composer and is very lyrical as it explores the existential loneliness a man
walking alone on the shores of the sea. The song draws quietly to a close and is, on an emotional level,
somewhat unresolved.
-Brian Nelson
Lyrics
The Universe's stars are falling, sinking with violence from their lofty abodes. Pitching down, cracking the
black skull, and plunging headlong through the yawning abyss.
Suns and moons surge and fall, cords of alabaster tangle and cascade, binding the stained sky with chains,
thrashing the night with order and disdain, descending as angels.
-Eric Nelson
