    Story Behind the Song
Ole Anders wrote the intro and the verse of this song in the fall of 1997, and asked me (Erlend) if I could come up with some kind of chorus that matched. After a number of attempts we found some chords that matched beautifully. I can't speak for the lyrics and vocal performance, but for the musical part of the song, the structure was set pretty quickly. The solos weren't ready until during recording (in may 2000). The recording was pretty frustrating, because of the constant squeeky sounds that appeared on the steel string acostic for almost every chord change, but we pulled through it, and up to date it's one of our most beloved songs written.
According to Ole Anders, he came up with the lyrics and vocals of the chorus by mentally picturing a psychedelic room at his grandparents on a fishing island in Norway. The room had brown autumn trees tapestry and a number of mirrors. The story of the song is based on some sailor story Ole Anders once heard. A lot of people died on the sea.

    Lyrics
    Sail

In the year before its coming
    great ships sailed at sea
made their way across the oceans
    paying death no heed

One would sail to distant shorelines
    one was lost at sea
one far out beyond the charts
    would sail eternally

    Sail onto the ocean
    protect me from the waves
    cause I'm weary
    and waiting for the morning

On that day the great storm broke
his hair would turn to white
ships were shattered by the waves
    and sinking out of sight

    In the water voices screamed
but they could not be saved
    one alone survived the night
    alive to tell his tale
