Story Behind the Song
Halley's Comet is my first experiment in
sharing my songs with the world via the
mp3 format. So, hopefully, future recordings
will be even better. For simplicity's sake,
I decided to record it "live", i.e. playing
the guitar and singing at the same time. It
took me something like twelve takes to get one
that had small enough mistakes that I was satisfied.
Halley's Comet is the sequel to another song,
"If You See Dani" and perhaps that one will
appear here some day as well.
Lyrics
To this day I smile to remember
watching Halley's Comet with you.
On that dark mountain top,
I could see my future, I just knew.
You pointed up at the sky and said
you'd ride that comet's tail . . .
I thought you were just talking.
I really thought you were just talking
I remember the stink in that goddamn car
Old upholstery and fake cinnamon smell
and I was sure that's what is smelled like in heaven
I wish I'd told you to go to hell
That's what I smelled the last time I saw you
before you drove that car away
leaving me behind with my future,
dreams I never dreamed again from that day
I don't blame you, even though I could not tame you
you know I honestly wish you well.
I should thank you, it really is better this way,
my angel who never fell
And I know you'll be happy in heaven . . .
I know I'm happy here on the Earth
In ancient lands great cities
stand on the ruins of the old
And I never thought I'd see you again,
doin' archeology on my soul
It did not satisfy me to tell you
that I fell in love again
First is not best, it's just first,
but it was you way back when.
and even though my new center
is far kinder than you
Even though my new dreams
have for the most part come true
I'll send postcards to you in Heaven
because . . .
After all, I miss you
I miss you
To this day I smile to remember
watching Halley's Comet with you
I smile through my tears,
because every word you told me was true
That unlived life sometimes haunts me,
unborn children, tears never cried
but I would not trade for them,
there's no recrossing that divide.
I don't blame you, even though I could not tame you
you know I honestly wish you well.
I should thank you, it really is better this way,
my angel who never fell
And I know you'll be happy in heaven . . .
I know I'm happy here on the Earth
