Story Behind the Song
Thomas Edison regarded accompaniments (whether piano or orchestral) as a tiresome necessity and insisted that they be kept strictly in the background. This is very evident on the present recording; but it also shows the merits of Edison's methods - the clear and forward vocal quality and the remarkably unobtrusive surface. This record was originally published as a wax Amberol* in about 1910 but later reissued in the more durable Blue Amberol format.
Stephen Adams (pseudonym for Michael Maybrick) was a popular singer and composer in the late 19th century.
* Amberol: fabricated name used by Edison for the extra-fine-groove cylinder which he introduced in 1908. Amberols achieved high quality as well as doubling the playing time available, but they wore rapidly and were superseded by the celluloid Blue Amberol in 1912.
