    Story Behind the Song
This is a very personal story based on true events of my "Family" written for my parents for their 50th Anniversary.

    Lyrics
    "FAMILY"

CHUCK AND MARY THEY RAISED EIGHT KIDS
THEY LOVED THEM ALL NO MATTER WHAT THEY DID
FIVE LITTLE WOMEN AND THREE STRONG HEALTHY BOYS
HE DROVE A TRUCK FOR THIRTY SOME SEASONS
SHE WORKED ODD JOBS FOR DIFFERENT REASONS
THEY BOUGHT A HOUSE IN MARKHAM ILLINOIS

    THEY PLANTED A GENERATION TREE
THERE WERE A FEW BROKEN BRANCHES
    THAT THE WORLD COULD SEE
BUT THE ROOTS WERE STRONG NO MATTER
    WHAT WENT WRONG
THEY KNEW THEY WERE A FAMILY

NOW THE KIDS GREW OLDER AS KIDS WILL
TRIED TO BE LIKE THEIR PARENTS TOUGH SHOES TO FILL
CHUCK AND MARY PRAYED THE VALUES TAUGHT WOULD STAND
ONE BY ONE THEY LEFT THE NEST
SOME RETURNED WHEN IT WAS BEST
THEY ALWAYS KNEW THEY'D GET A HELPING HAND

    THEY PLANTED A GENERATION TREE
THERE WERE A FEW BROKEN BRANCHES
    THAT THE WORLD COULD SEE
BUT THE ROOTS WERE STRONG NO MATTER
    WHAT WENT WRONG
THEY KNEW THEY WERE A FAMILY

NOW THEIR LONG SINCE RETIRED AND DOIN' FINE
    THEY LOST TOMMY IN '89
WHEN THEY GATHERED TO PRAY BESIDE HIS BED
IT WAS THE ONLY TIME THEY EVER SAW THEIR DADDY CRY AS HE WATCHED THE YOUNGEST OF HIS SONS DIE
HE WOULD HAVE GIVEN ANYTHING TO TRADE HIS LIFE INSTEAD

NOW THE CHILDREN OF THEIR CHILDREN ARE GROWING TOO
CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE HARDSHIP THEY WENT THROUGH
BUT THEY CARRY IN THEIR HEARTS THIS GREAT LEGACY
NO MATTER THE JOURNEY NO MATTER THE ROAD
NO MATTER THE BURDEN OF A HEAVY LOAD
THEY KNOW THAT THEY'RE A FAMILY

    THEY PLANTED A GENERATION TREE
THERE WERE A FEW BROKEN BRANCHES
    THAT THE WORLD COULD SEE
BUT THE ROOTS WERE STRONG NO MATTER
    WHAT WENT WRONG
THEY KNEW THEY WERE A FAMILY
THEY KNEW THEY WERE A FAMILY]
