A haunting, bluesy song that gradually draws the listener in to a mesmerizing world of sound and ideas. The lyrics talk about ways to reclaim power in our lives. Along with the emotive vocals of Barbara Lewis, hear the wonderful keyboard stylings of John Deley (piano and synth); the atmospheric guitar passages by Peter Calo (acoustic and electric); and the soaring soprano sax solo by Aaron Heick.

    Story Behind the Song
"Freedom" is the second of three songs on the CD called, Freedom. Each song is inspired by a place of great power. "Freedom," was written in the city where I feel most at home, New York. (About the other two songs on the CD: "Holy," was written after a visit to an ancient church in Venice, Italy; "Light," was inspired by a long stay on a tiny sun-drenched island off the coast of Florida.)

I was having a hard time finding the lyrics to begin this song about freedom and power. One night my husband, Nicholas Regush, said to me, "How about this as a first line?... "There's a way to feel the power of the world..." I started with that line the next morning, and the rest of the song flowed pretty easily.

We did the recording in four 4-hour sessions in New York. Peter Calo, a fine guitarist and singer, also has a recording studio in New York. It's in an old building with an ancient hand-operated elevator. Very creaky and a little scary to run. The elevator opens right into the studio. During recording, if the elevator began to groan, we had to stop and wait for it to come up before continuing.

For the recording, the keyboards, guitar, percussion and sax were completed in about eight hours. It was very relaxed. Very creative. My vocal track took around 3 hours. I sang 8 full takes. Each one with a slightly different end result in mind. My husband is always in the studio when I record the final vocals. He knows what I can do, and helps me to get the sound and feel I want.

    Lyrics
    FREEDOM
    © Barbara Lewis May/1999

There's a way to feel the power of the world
There's a way to wash the blood that's on our hands
Say goodbye to tyranny, say goodbye to slavery
Let the flags and borders fall,
    Let Freedom rise.

There's a way to keep the hope within our hearts
There's a way to wash the sorrow from our eyes
    Say goodbye to holy blame
    Say goodbye to racial pain
Let the song of justice soar
    Let Freedom rise.

There's a way to love the mysteries of night
There's a way to wash the darkness from our lives
    Say goodbye to lonely fears
    Say goodbye to love-lost tears
Let the light of vision shine
    Let Freedom rise.

There's a way find a love that's deep and true
There's a way to wash our hearts and feel renewed
    Say goodbye to self-disguise
    Say goodbye to secret lies
Let the flame of passion burn
    Let Freedom rise.
