    Story Behind the Song
Just as the song goes, we were driving to Denver and just past Trinidad, through the mountains. I then noticed the small historic marker sign for the Ludlow Massacre. I knew what it was, but my wife had never heard of it. We got off, turned around and came back and drove down the dirt road, and found the memorial to our right, just by the tracks. Inside a little kiosk was a book of comments. People had come from all over the world and had signed their names, along with stories of relatives who worked the mines, both during that time, as well as understanding the issue from their own experiences in other countries. It gave me a whole new experience of Solidarity.

    Lyrics
    Ludlow, by DKGrant copyright 2000

    D Am
    Driving up to Denver
    Coming out of Trinidad
    D Am
Youll see a sign to make you remember
History to make you mad D

    C G
Now it seems so long ago
    Families had to fight
    C G
    Their children have forgotten that
They died to deliver our rights D

    Chorus
    D
In Ludlow by the train tracks
    C
The fires lit up the night
    D
    They hid beneath the floorboards
    C
While the bullets took their flight
    Am D
And then John D took their lives

    For miles along the freeway
    The slag is piled high
The grass is growing over it
Looking like graves as you drive by

But if you take that turn off
And ease down the dusty track
    You find a lonely statue
A lovely place to have a snack

    Chorus

If you dig a round a bit
    Soon youre sure to find
    A dog-eared little notebook
    Containing scribbled lines

    Pilgrims came and left
    Their poems, songs and flowers
    All to honor the tragedy
That is the worlds and ours

    Chorus

    Our little noted history,
    As Waco soon will be
Like The Great Wars DC veterans
    And the broken deportees

People have a right to live
    In freedom and peace
    Speaking any languages
    Living out their own beliefs

    Chorus Repeat

    New Chorus

    Somewhere while were sleeping
The Fires light up the night
    Our families and our children
Hide from the Big Mans knife
    Am D
    From the Big Mans knife
