Story Behind the Song
This song was originally a poem, written with a magnetic poetry kit during freshman year in college. While working on writing new songs for the album earlier this year, I happened to dig the poem up, revised it a little, wrote a chorus, and voila. The song was recorded in June of 2000, in one take, and I wrote the music and lyrics to the bridge two minutes before recording. To me, the mango represents something desired but forbidden - secret dreams and unfulfilled wishes.
Lyrics
Sky gold with passion
Vodka shaken not stirred
You're black with expectations in the night
I will not hug you under the sheets
Nor pour the simmering cup of ice
Over your eyes
Open your eyes
I only wish I only had only one love for me
I only dream of love with no boundaries
Fear to see where the night angels tread
Chaos is rising like blue mercury
Wanting to forget the name of my last lover
I plunge into the sky
I only wish I only had only one love for me
Can you feed me little white lies to help me live my life?
Tell me I'm not responsible for my actions?
Can you tell me who created the universe so small...I need some insight, darlin'
Cigarette is burning in an empty ashtray
Television's blaring and outside the sun begins to rot
Sympathy becomes you when you're all alone
Did you know that freedom lies in your smile, in your smile?
I only wish I only had only one love for me
