    Story Behind the Song
Following the crew members on a U.S. Navy Patrol assignment, this is the person who tracks the submarines. When it comes to catching them, he's the man!

    Lyrics
They launched the bird at sunrise,
While the sleepy town lay dreaming.
In their hands was all the free world's fate.
The time had finally come, for the job that must be done...
A missile boat had run the northern straits.

The pilots they were good, and the crew they were eager,
But each one of them knew one thing all too well.
On one man the burden lay, to sink the elusive prey,
The Tacco would have to send that sub to hell.

    "On station," spoke the pilot,
"Yeah, we're ready," said the Tacco
And the tubes began to drop their precious stores.
The pattern hit the water, and the sensors dangled deeply, listening to the sounds from the ocean floor.

The scope, it did glow faintly, with circle upon circle, passing through one point before the Tacco's eyes.
He picked up the mike, and he spoke unto the pilot, "If you're ready man, we've got 'em localized."

"Kill Ready" said the lights, and the racks they were unlocked.
Far below, the evil crew cried in the dark.
As the first "Mad Man" was heard, it was the Tacco gave the word,
And a '46 went steaking to it's mark.

The rest, of course, is history of how they stopped a war, when the enemy saw their boats could not get through.
They fought back bitter tears, and they fell back full of fear,
Of this P-3, and all her gallant crew.

The moral to this epic tale is one we can't deny,
So, let us make it clear unto yourselves.
A pilot is a pilot, it's his job to fly the plane,
But an "NFO", my friends, is something else.
