    Story Behind the Song
As the song says, Bob Ford, the man that shot
Jesse James was killed and temporarily buried
in the tiny mountain mining town of Creed, Colorado.

Bob Ford's original grave site and the grave of
some other minor outlaws can still be seen at
the town cemetary. The outlaws are buried with
the length of the grave running North to South,
rather than the traditional East to West. They
lie in their graves as they lived, "crosswise to
    the world".

    Lyrics
Everybody knows the story of ol' Jesse James
And how it is that he came to die
He was shot in the back by little Robert Ford
Who pulled that gun on the sly

When ol' Jesse died Bob was forced to run
To Creed Colorado he did go
The death of Jesse James gave him such renown
That he had his run of that town

    Chorus:

Bob Ford, Bob Ford does your grave run north to south?
When the good Lord comes with that Eastern sun
And we rise with that blinding light
Will you lie in your grave in the darkness all alone
    Condemned to endless night?

Ed O'Kelly born in ol' Missouri
Was a friend of the James family
He swore on the grave of his good friend Jesse
That his vengeance he would seek

Ed gave his shotgun to ol' French Joe
And said meet at Bob Ford's saloon
Hand me the gun as I pass through the door
And I'll send Bob Ford to his doom

    Nellie Russel was dancehall girl
Who died from booze and morphine
Bob Ford was at the bar a begging for money
    To bury his dancehall queen

Ed O'Kelly burst through the doorway
    And shotgun lead did fly
When Bob Ford died a crowd did gather
    Shouting hang Ed O'Kelly high

A deputy sheriff grabbed Ed O'Kelly
And hustled him off to jail
In Canyon City he served his time
Only 10 years for his crime

Bob Ford was buried in Creede Colorado
In a grave on the edge of town
But his wife took him back to Ol' Missouri
To a grave on sacred ground
