Story Behind the Song
My girlfriend broke up with me and I wrote a song about a squirrel.
Lyrics
Underneath a Willow tree in some grass that's much too high,
lies a little boy so scared of being lonely he don't know if he should live or die.
So he lifts himself above the reeds to see a squirrel above his head.
Squirrel says, "Listen here boy, there ain't no question. Would you rather die alone or walk from here instead?"
In and out the summertime underneath a neat blue sky,
stands a pair if eyes justa staring upward wondering what it would be like to fly.
Along came a girl with a pretty face asking him to lay her down.
He said, "Fuck you girl, what you thinking, I'd rather try and fly than lay here on the ground."
Oh and when they look at me, they look and see that I can see I'm crying.
Oh and when I look around, I see the world come crumbling down,
and I ask the people all around, "Why's the water trying to drown me?"
Heading west on a stretch of road towards where the sun does go,
drives a little car with a man unknowing with a broken heart but a heart of gold.
As he passes signs his mind fades back to a time when two went east.
And the sadness comes but he keeps on going cause he knows they done their best and they had fun at least.
Oh and when they look at me, they look and see that I can see I'm crying.
Oh and when I look around, I see the world come crumbling down,
and I ask the people all around, "Why's the water trying to drown me?"
Underneath a Willow tree in some grass that's perfect size,
lies some broken reeds where a boy laid lonely before he had the strength to rise.
And the squirrel stops his daily deeds and takes a great big look around.
Sees a little girl coming walking toward,
wipes her eyes, walks under willow, lays down on the ground.
Oh and when they look at me, they look and see that I can see I'm crying.
Oh and when I look around, I see the world come crumbling down,
and I ask the people all around, "Why's the water trying to drown me?"
