A first-person account of the aftermath of war. A cry for Croatia, and Kosovo too.
CD: Women On The Edge   Label: Rockin' Rowe Records

    Story Behind the Song
I am of Croatian descent. Last spring I visited the island of Brac, in
the Adriatic Sea near the city of Split in Croatia. I went to the tiny
village of Dol where both of my paternal grandparents are from. This
experience was one of the most incredible of my life. But it was
somehow overshadowed by seeing the effects of war on this
beautiful country. Although Brac had barely been affected, we drove
through a great deal of Croatia and we were amazed and sobered
by what we saw. Having never been in a country torn apart by war
(the Civil War was a long time ago) I couldn't believe my eyes.
Whole towns and villages levelled. Empty. Sad and ghostly. When I
came home to the U.S.A. I wrote Just Like Us (Croatia). Now it
    happens again in Kosovo.

    Lyrics
    I live in America
Land of the brave and the home of the free
I never knew how it would be
To have bombs exploding all around me

I went to the country of my grandfather
And his father and his father and his father before
Everywhere I looked I couldn't help but see
The ravages of an ugly war

This is a country that was beautiful (Just like ours)
With the sea and mountains and lakes
People devoted to their families (Just like ours)
And for their freedom there's been hell to pay

Now I have seen with my own eyes
Churches bombed and schools burned right down to the ground
Homes for people just like you and me
With walls full of machine gun rounds

They used to live together peacefully
Until tolerance gave way to what they call "Ethnic cleansing"
It only takes a few persistent devils to stir it up
Stir up the cauldron of hate

Next time you're sitting there in your easy chair
Safe and warm within your home
Take a few minutes and say a prayer
Don't take for granted your freedom

    I live in America
Land of the brave and the home of the free
