    Story Behind the Song
Dawna sang this song acapella on a cassette tape and handed it to her guitarist Mark Greenawalt. Together they got the music out of her head and onto CD. The lyrics are very moving, but you've just got to listen to them first. Don't try to tell somebody what the songs about, just let them listen. This song has brought chills to audiences in Nashville at the Blue Bird Cafe, and Tootsies World Famous Orchid Lounge. This song was recorded in Studio B in Nashville which was made famous by all of the hits that Elvis Presley had recorded there. Not only does she bring the lyrics and the composition to the table, Dawna delivers this song like no one else can.

    Lyrics
The post man brought the mail
    Like he does every time
I sat here on the front porch steps
Sorting through what's yours and mine

It's the same routine that I go through
    Almost every day
But this time sure was different
    I got your letter today

I've known for a while now
    There was something wrong
The fire I'd felt in every kiss
Has been missing for so long

And even when your lying next to me
I can tell you're miles away
But now I think I understand
    I got your letter today

It was signed I love you
And when will you be free
    I've been dying without you
I need you here with me

Those words cut deep just like a knife
And tore my heart in two
'Cause that letter wasn't meant for me
It was sent from her to you

I've been sitting here for hours
    Wondering what to say
I never dreamed a love like ours
    Could ever turn this way

No don't try to comfort me
That'd be more than I can stand
There's no denying what's written here
In this letter in my hand

And it's signed I love you
And when will you be free
    I've been dying without you
I need you here with me

Those words cut deep just like a knife
And tore my heart in two
'Cause that letter wasn't meant for me
It was sent from her to you
