A HANDFUL OF US IN MPLS GOT FED UP WITH MAJOR LABEL CONTROL OF THE AIRWAVES, CHARTS and DISTRIBUTION, so we wrote a track about it. In this song, we *fantasize* about a world where there is "FREE RADIO"... MMMmn... A racy electronic-organica adventure into tight grooves, bad-@$$ guitars, beats and *most* importantly, FREEDOM for ALL! |
CD: RADIO-FREE [single w/b.side], AUGUST 2000
Label: sursumcorda.com
Credits: Music: thousand void crush [David Wesley, Monte Schaffer]; Bad @$$ (!) distorted guitar: Pete Kavanaugh; STATION9 [lyrics, vox, edit imput], Production/Mastering: Wesley Mayhem of sursumcorda.com |
Story Behind the Song
We're FED UP with MAJOR COMPANIES controlling the charts and airwaves... We're tired of getting bullied and being told "You can play, but you can't collect when you pass GO..." A somewhat humorous metaphor for a nasty but realistic situation plauging many artists- independent and otherwise. In this track, I dream of "Free Radio"... "WHAT RADIO SHOULD BE..." The lyrics were partially inspired by my partner Lorren, who's project, Richard For Cerebellum, is about as beautiful and unconventional as you can get... After a fantastic review in CAKE Magazine, he was asked to submit to a major label [that shall remain neameless], then rejected strictly on the grounds that it wasn't "pop" enough. We do chuckle about it, as his genre is not anywhere near Pop, but all in all, it is a sad reflection on the narrow commercial music world.
