A little ditty written for the members of the Internet rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic newsgroup last year. Well, that's what folk music is, really. Stuff which relates to society. Newsgroups are society! Placed here for the benefit of those foolish enough to wish to download it.

    Story Behind the Song
There was a bit of a thread about songs for or about RMMGA, the acoustic guitar newsgroup, in fall 1999. As a songwriter this was a challenge and as a guitarist, it called for a complete break with my normal legato-celtic style. Just a question of psyching up, writing the words, changing the way my fingers and brain worked for an hour or two and recording. It's a minidisk single mike live recording with no processing. What you hear is what I did, Allah-appeasing bum note in critical place and all! If you asked me to play this now I couldn't - I neither play nor sing like this normally. It is like acting. I had to change personality to do this. The whole process took about 3 hours start to finish. The guitar used was my self-built 0000.

    Lyrics
RMMGA song. Played in drop D tuning, no capo.

    R, M, M-G-A
    Boys'n'girls come out to play
Picking on an open string (let it ring!)
    Doing without delay (or echo!)
    R, M, M-G-A
Boys and girls got tracks to lay
    Hammering the rails down
    Wearing all their nails down
    Plucking on the bass below
At any time of night or day!

    R, M, M-G-A
    Boys'n'girls come out to play
Pickin' on an ole guitar (you're a star!)
Even if you don't get pay (or an audience!)
    R, M, M-G-A
    Everyone can have their say
    Lurking in the byways
    Of the superhighway
    Tappin' on the QWERTY keys
At any time of night or day!

    (bridge)
    Forget the phaser
    Cut the chorus
We're made of wood so don't ignore us
    Unplug the AC cord
    Throw away the jack
    Hold down a C chord
    And get the feeling back
In the fingers which go dead
Because your dreadnought's much too fat
    To ergonomically
    Hold like that!

    R, M, M-G-A
You can be ten thousand miles away
    From Alaska to Australia
    We can mail yer
Two hundred times a day (so be selective!)
    R, M, M-G-A
Boys and girls come out to play
    Barring all our F-chords
    Barring all our F-words
Bearing our souls and tapping our toes
At any time of night or day!

    (first verse repeat)
