Story Behind the Song
The myth of Orpheus, musician / poet, son of Apollo, continues to resonate with me. Orpheus and his Lyre could charm anyone and anything; it has been said that the trees which grew in Thrace migrated there to better hear the music of Orpheus. The myth -- that Orpheus lost his wife, Eurydice, to death; that he dared to venture to Hades to win back his beloved from the god of the Underworld; that he was ultimately unsuccessful -- speaks volumes about the power of love as at once the thing that gives life and the thing that often takes it away (Orpheus was torn limb from limb by a mob of women when he could not return their affections, for he was still in love with his dead beloved). It is said that the Lyre of Orpheus was thrown in a river, later retrieved and sent to the stars, where Vega dances at it's center -- a burning star, a rapturous song, and a people in love with being in love, though many of them will never find it.
