Story Behind the Song
This song -- the lament of a son whose father is forced to leave home to earn a living -- comes from the tamburica tradition of Vojvodina, a region now part of northern Serbia on the border with Hungary. We decided to perform it in the style of a Macedonian bar band in a southern Balkan dance rhythm. We recorded it early during the production of our first CD, "Nonstop," and got it right on almost the first take.
Lyrics
The song's sung in Romany -- here's an approximate English translation:
I walk alone
Oh God, I'm poor
Oh God, I'm poor
I have no father
Chorus: Oh, I'm poor, I have no father
If my father would come to me,
If I could see his hands,
I he would embrace me,
I'd be so happy
Oh God, I became poor
I never saw my father
He went out into the world
I was so unhappy
