    Story Behind the Song
I used to live in Holyhead, but it was only many years later that I went to Dublin on the ferry. There was live music. Everyone gathered round the loading well to listen. I could imagine what it must be like to go home to Ireland, after many years away.

    Lyrics
    Ferry home

    The ferry sailed from Holyhead
    full crowded round for Christmas
    with boys of forty-one
    as bright-eyed children
all going home to keep the faith
    with mothers and their kith
    their kin and sundry others
that they drink with now and then
    home
    as children travelling
    grown men

The ferry bar was crowded out
    they celebrated Christmas
as if no time would do
    except the present
    then flooded down the corridors
    with mother in their eyes
    with memory of others
that they drink with now and then
    home
    as children travelling
    grown men

The loading well was ringing loud
    with music meant for Christmas
    with fiddle and with song
    to cheer the many
who ambled round with drink in hand
    and mother on their mind
    and memory of others
that they drink with now and then
    home
    as children travelling
    grown men

There never was a time like this
    nor better time than Christmas
    as music draws the mind
    and fills the features
of children coming home at last
    to mothers left behind
    to memory of others
that they drink with now and then
    home
    as children travelling
    grown men
