A song about a mother letting go. When all the family's men go to sea - and some never return - it must grieve mothers to know that could be the fate of their little sons

    Story Behind the Song
Songs of the sea are usually about the men who go to sea. Otherwise they are about the women after the tragedy. This one takes in the feelings of a mother, who has lost her man to the sea, whose older sons are at sea, and whose younger son is almost certain to join them.

    Lyrics
All of My Boys will be Men

    chorus
Johnnie come down to the sea my boy
Johnnie come down to the sea
Johnnie come down to the sea my boy
Johnnie come down to the sea

See where the breakers all rattle and roar
See where the spume bounces high
See where the grey on the sky and the shore
masks the sea bed where they lie
masks the sea bed where they lie
    ch
Look at the boats pulling round on the wave
Look how they hurtle and tug
Look where the wreckage can no more be brave
Think of the men we can't hug
Think of the men we can't hug
    ch
That's where your father set sail on the tide
That's the long berth he once left
That's all that's left since your father has died
    leaving your mother bereft
    leaving your mother bereft
    ch
Please don't you join all your brothers out there
Please don't go off to the deep
Please find a job on the land Johnnie dear
    Ships are tormenting my sleep
    Ships are tormenting my sleep
    ch
When you grow old enough don't sail the seas
When would I see you again
Well I suppose you will do as you please
All of my boys will be men
All of my boys will be men
    ch
Walk in the shallows with me for a while
Walk in my steps in the sea
Walk on ahead You're my beautiful child
Here I will soon set you free
Here I will soon set you free
chorus (+last line sung 3 times)
