Story Behind the Song
[Songwriter's note] This song was my signal to take the evening in a totally different direction. Amy Steinberg had assembled a "happening" of artists at Will's Pub including Sosumi, Garden Groove, herself and me--wearing a white bathrobe and nothing else. During this song (and you'll know when) I drop the bathrobe and proceed to play the rest of the song (and the set) completely butt-naked. I've only done it once, but urban legend has it that this takes place at every show. Please!
Not-so-incidentally, this tune was written for the great comic and writer Tracy Berna (bitch!) who was last seen penning scripts in Hollywood for Weird Al Yankovic's Saturday morning show (since cancelled!) and not returning e-mails. Instant Karma. For fun, see the annotated lyrics beneath the other set of lyrics. Insight you did not need to know.
Lyrics
Funny thing happened on the way over here
some kind of butterflies
what are they doing there?
hope knows no road today
contentment is the butter on my bread
a knock upon the door and you appear
all of a sudden, my head is so unclear now
and I tremble like a little dog
confronted by the sudden thought
of his master's passing
I touch your skin and it releases me
creates a temporary truth
like bathing by candlelight
I'm warm and awed by your sweet mystery
unknowingly you call to me
we're at the gates of one man's dream tonight
things aren't exactly what they seem alright
so I drown myself in his dream
and combine it with my own
if nothing else, tonight I'll have
no fear of being alone
no - no fear have I when you're by my side
no fear have I when you're by my side
no - no fear tonight, it's great
being alive
with you by my side, no fear have I
funny thing happened in the midst of things
your eyes set me aflame
could've been an absence thought
could've been a ghost over me
could've been hopeless speculation and all
but for one second, I could have beat the times
my problems looked like children's
nursery rhymes
and in that sheltered space, I was the king
and someone's President
and fear was one more word I didn't know
No Fear Have I
(The Annotated Version)
[Whenever I do this song, I giggle--because I can see the imagery clearly and the inspiration for the song. It sounds deep, but here--you'll get an idea of what's really going on here.]
Funny thing happened on the way over here
some kind of butterflies
what are they doing there?
hope knows no road today
contentment is the butter on my bread
[I'm on my way over to Tracy's. She's a Goddess. We're going on a date, sort of.
I'm not good enough for her.]
a knock upon the door and you appear
all of a sudden, my head is so unclear now
and I tremble like a little dog
confronted by the sudden thought
of his master's passing
[Yowsa. Beyond being funny, she's a babe, in an odd sort of way.]
I touch your skin and it releases me
[I shook her hand!]
creates a temporary truth
like bathing by candlelight
I'm warm and awed by your sweet mystery
unknowingly you call to me
[She has this way of looking at you, you know what I'm saying.]
we're at the gates of one man's dream tonight
[We were at Disneyland!]
things aren't exactly what they seem alright
so I drown myself in his dream
and combine it with my own
if nothing else, tonight I'll have
no fear of being alone
no - no fear have I when you're by my side
no fear have I when you're by my side
no - no fear tonight, it's great
being alive
with you by my side, no fear have I
funny thing happened in the midst of things
your eyes set me aflame
[Man, it was one of those looks like the one that Nala gave Simba in "The Lion King", you know the look I'm talking about.]
could've been an absence thought
could've been a ghost over me
could've been hopeless speculation and all
[She was probably thinking about Sib, her black boyfriend in L.A.]
but for one second, I could have beat the times
my problems looked like children's
nursery rhymes
and in that sheltered space, I was the king
and someone's President
and fear was one more word I didn't know
[All it takes is a second to realize a dream, even if it's based on a false sense of worth. However fleeting that is, it resulted in a song and the memory lingers on, oh lord, yeah-yeah-yeah.
