Story Behind the Song
After Mowgli (Richard Logsdon) has revealed that he has been sharing time with the Bandar-Log (the monkey people), he is severely admonished by Baloo (Eric Michaud) and then comforted by Bagheera (Ashley Locheed.) As Mowgli falls asleep, the animals gather around him and sing this powerful and simple tune. This was one of the first melodies written, as it would become a recurring theme throughout the rest of the soundtrack. [Composer's note:] I really struggled to push the famous Sherman Brother's score to Disney's "The Jungle Book" out of my head during the writing of this show--it wasn't easy, but nothing comes out sounding remotely like "The Bare Necessities." Putting music to a legend's lyrics was a little daunting too, like "who am I to colloborate with Kipling?"
I had never been a musical director before and can't read music--so directing the six talented actors was absolutely crazy. But they made it easy. The first time they did this scene, I broke down in tears--so THAT's what it's like to have your music come to life!
Lyrics
Now Rann the kite brings home the night
that Mang the bat sets free
the herd is shut in byre and hut
for loosed til dawn are we
this is the hour of pride and power
of talon and tush and claw
oh hear the call, good hunting all
that keep the Jungle Law!
